Vomiting

1.      My child vomits after almost every meal. Is this ok?

a.       The valve that allows one way traffic is weak in babies and that why they vomit easily. So if your baby is healthy and is gaining weight adequately, then it is ok. However, your baby should not aspirate the vomit or choke on vomit.

2.      Is there a way to stop this?

a.       Most common cause of this type of vomiting is faulty feeding technique. A lot of air is swallowed by the baby and it brings food out while it escapes. So make sure your feeding position is correct. And burp the baby to release the air.

3.      How do I burp the baby?

a.       The best way is to place your baby with its head on your shoulders and pat his back till you hear the belching sound. This way you will release the air and reduce the chance of vomiting.

4.      Is vomiting dangerous?

a.       Vomiting because of a weak valve (the sphincter) and due to swallowed air is not dangerous. But your baby can breathe the vomit or choke on it. That can be fatal. So it is upto you to make sure you reduce the chance of vomiting due to trivial causes

.

5.      My baby’s vomit is green. Is something wrong?

a.       If your baby vomits foul smelling contents or if the vomit is green/yellow, take him to your pediatrician at the earliest. These are signs of advanced problems and they can be effectively and efficiently treated if detected early.
