Yoga for Children?
Yoga? Why? Because its wonders cannot be emphasized enough. And hey, its India's gift to the world! Patanjali, the author of Yoga Sutras defined Yoga as the ability to focus the mind on a single point without distraction. As a physical discipline, Yoga integrates the body and breathing techniques to improve self awareness and clears the mind. For those of you who practice it regularly, I'd be preaching to the converted. And for those who haven't actually started a regimented Yoga program - it's worth taking a look at, but remember, it's a long term commitment and investment on your health. You will not feel the gains and benefits on the first day. Be patient. Your wow days are right around the corner and you are going to feel amazing.
I've often heard, "If Yoga works so great for me, can it benefit my child?" The answer is an astounding yes! However, you need to understand that yoga is like medicine. When prescribed by a doctor and taken as advised, it has the potential to heal. But when prescribed by a non-professional or worse yet, self prescribed, it can cause damage. When it comes to children, you need to be even more careful as they tend to hurt themselves easily. Learn Yoga only from a qualified teacher and practice initially under professional supervision. Do not start off practicing by yourself ! Be aware that there are a few asanas that should not be practiced when suffering from stomach diseases, ulcers, high blood pressure etc., just as some medicines are contraindicated for some diseases. A qualified yoga teacher can guide you on this. Generally there are about 4-5 yoga poses that children can practice safely. They are Tadasana, Trikonasana, Padmasana and Pawanmuktasana. We do not recommend making your child try it at home and hence will not explain them here. We are aware that you can read the positions of these poses elsewhere, but we strongly advise against it.
Have your child learn and practice from a qualified yoga teacher. If you, as a parent have not been practicing yoga, this is probably a good time to start. Build a stronger bond and create some wonderful memories as you and your child attain inner peace together!
