Breast Feeding Myths
1. The thick yellowish first milk (colostrum) is dirty milk and should not be given - This is a MYTH. The first milk is very healthy and has important nutrients and SHOULD NOT BE DISCARDED.
2. Breast milk is not sufficient for my baby, and I should give him/her other foods to make my infant grow better - another MYTH. Breast milk is sufficient for your baby and covers all of his/her nutrient needs. For the first six months, your baby does not need anything other than breast milk, not even water.
3. Breast milk should be diluted - MYTH again. Do not do anything to breast milk. Let your baby suckle and take the milk in its purest form. No adulteration required.
4. Breast feeding causes my breasts to have increased brown pigmentation around my nipples - MYTH. The enlargement of the areola (the area around your nipple) is a natural phenomenon. It happens during pregnancy.
5. I have to feed my baby at fixed times - modern MYTH. This is another area of concern for most mothers. In a bid to infuse 'discipline' mothers tend to feed on a time schedule. Do not do that. Discipline can be infused later on. Feed your baby as and when s/he wants to feed and is hungry. Do not feed based on planned timings or convenience.
6. I should change breasts frequently during feeding - MYTH. Breast milk contains fore milk and hind milk. Both are important for your baby and both have different nutrients. Allow your baby to nurse completely on one breast, before you change over to the next.
